Alternative certification programs are supposed to help get qualified people into the classroom with a minimum of paperwork and hassle. Some ed schools, however, are taking the name alternative certification for their programs and delivering anything but. In Ohio, for instance, one alternative certification program at Ursuline College requires 43 hours of coursework for alt cert teachers. It s no wonder that Ohio has only issued 450 conditional and alternative licenses since the program was started in 2000.
