This would have been worth attending: a honest discussion about why so few students at Harvard consider going into teaching, including a friendly nod by Randi Weingarten to Teach For America for attracting in droves students attending such elite institutions, if only for a temporary classroom stint.
Low pay for teachers may explain part of the problem here, but it's not the only reason, not by a mile. There's also a sizable hurdle that must be jumped: the willingness to dedicate several of one's college years to taking mostly vacuous education coursework. Make it rigorous and real, and we might be surprised who shows up for teacher prep.
