In its mission to save the world, err, close the achievement gap, Teach For America is breaking free of domestic borders (but not its acronym), hopping the Rio Grande and sailing the Atlantic. That's right, Teach For America is going global.
In its brief history, TFA has flirted with all sorts of spin offs, some successful (The New Teacher Project), some disastrous (anyone else remember "Teach!"). This latest derivative, Teach For All, was announced with much fanfare at none other than the Clinton Global Initiative, by none other than the celeb du siecle, Bill Clinton. The international version of TFA already has projects underway in India, Israel, South Africa, Estonia and Germany. Though "franchises" of the TFA model will eventually be locally funded and governed, the initial start up operation has scored some heavy weight financial backing from the Clinton, Dell and Robbins piggybanks.
In addition to this global initiative, TFA has also launched an effort to encourage alumni of the two year program to become school leaders. Currently the program has over 275 alumni serving as principals. DC Public Schools could serve as the poster child. Alumni not only run the system--Michelle Rhee, her deputy chancellor Kaya Henderson, and a posse of key staffers--but they make up nearly 10 percent of principal positions in the city and hold a seat on the school board.
