The National Board of Professional Teaching Standards reports that 8,196 teachers have received their National Board certification this year, another seismic leap in the program's short history. That brings the total number of Board-certified teachers in the U.S. to 32,131. Our back-of-the-envelope calculations show that the program has taken in over $74 million over time in application fees from successful applicants alone. It has also received just under $130 million in federal funds from the US Department of Education alone since its inception over ten years ago. (Other government agencies also contribute, such as the National Science Foundation). Hard evidence that Board-certified teachers contribute to greater student achievement gains is clearly long overdue.
