Do We Detect A Shift?

Stanford University, along with six other universities, has received a five-year, $5 million grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The "Teachers for a New Era" initiative is a successor to the earlier STEP grant. The reporting on this grant is interesting because it seems to indicate conventional teacher organizations are beginning to respond to criticisms of teacher preparation programs. For example, Teachers for a New Era intends to "create a culture of respect for evidence by looking at graduate effectiveness." Perhaps it is wishful thinking on our part, but this may indicate that evidence will be sought that graduates of teacher preparation programs raise student achievement. The grant also calls for better integration of teacher education with the liberal arts.
