We at TQB are against union-bashing. But what are we to make of the fact that the Detroit Federation of Teachers told its members to skip a day of class on Thursday to protest a deal to allow more charter schools in the Motor City? This week 153,000 children missed a day of instruction because Detroit was forced to close schools for lack of teachers. Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who condoned the work-stoppage, ought to be ashamed. The worst news is that the tactic seemed to have been pretty effective, as the charter school plan was scuttled by the Governor.
