Analyst, Reading Foundations Standard

The National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) is seeking Expert Analysts to support the Reading Foundations Standard of the Teacher Prep Review. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who is detail-oriented and analytical, and highly versed in the science of reading, including current research and instructional practices. Ideal candidates for this role will have a strong commitment to advancing educational equity.
You'll be a key element of our Reading Foundations Standard by joining one of two teams - the syllabus review team and/or the instructional materials team. On the syllabi team, you will review teacher preparation programs' materials against a rubric to determine how well equipped a program is to prepare teachers to deliver scientifically-based reading instruction. For the instructional materials team, you will review materials used in teacher preparation reading courses - such as online resources and textbooks.
This is a contract position and will require a minimum of 5-6 hours weekly leading up to a 2026 Teacher Prep Review: Reading Foundations report, with up to 6 hours of training prior to analysis. You may also be asked to attend online meetings related to analysis and training during the analysis period.
Syllabus Team Responsibilities:
1. Review key documents submitted by universities regarding their elementary teacher preparation Reading Foundations courses, including syllabi.
2. Analyze information from university courses (class time (includes lectures), tests and quizzes, assignments, and practicums) to determine adherence to the science of reading and the five core components of reading.
Textbook Team Responsibilities:
1. Review instructional materials used by universities during teacher preparation in Reading Foundations courses, including textbooks, articles, or other resources.
2. Provide analysis for instructional materials on their adherence to the science of reading, and the five core components of reading.
3. Draft well-written reviews for publication in NCTQ's Instructional Materials Database.
Qualifications
- Knowledge and expertise in the science of reading and prior experience in higher education or K-12 education;
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Experience working in a central office, teacher preparation program, education nonprofit, or state education agency is a plus;
- Proactive, independent worker committed to meeting deadlines;
- A passion for promoting equitable access to effective teachers for all students
Hours are flexible based on your desired schedule, but deadlines for project completion must be met. Pay for this position is $35/hour.
