“Fractional” Chief Financial Officer (part time contractor, approx 5 hours per month)

The National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (part-time or fractional) to help us advance our mission of ensuring every child has a great teacher through providing strategic management and oversight of NCTQ's finances.

Organization Description
NCTQ is on a mission to ensure every child has access to an effective teacher and that every teacher has the opportunity to become effective. This position is 100% remote—just like the entire NCTQ office. There is some travel involved, including a minimum of four in-person staff retreats per year.

Job Summary
The CFO (fractional, part-time) will be responsible for ensuring our strong fiscal management by reviewing monthly accounting activities and providing strategic fiscal guidance to NCTQ's staff and Board. The ideal candidate will have experience working in non-profits, and be invested in NCTQ's mission. The CFO will review the Director of Finance's monthly fiscal "close-out" report and provide a written summary for the Board Treasurer; then participate in monthly fiscal meetings with the NCTQ Board Treasurer, President, Director of Finance, and Chief of External Affairs. The CFO is instrumental in the annual budget development and semi-annual Board Meeting materials preparation. The CFO attends and presents at NCTQ's semi-annual Board Meetings in March and September (mid-fiscal year and end-of-fiscal-year) and is available to staff and Board on an "as-needed" basis for strategic guidance. The work-load is estimated at five hours per month with some additional hours around Board Meetings and year end (fiscal year 9/30).

Core responsibilities:

  • Complete reviews of monthly account reconciliations
  • Guide and assist with management and board reporting cycles
  • Guide and assist with strategic and annual planning/budgeting cycles
  • Participate in annual audit cycles
  • Provide input and/or feedback as requested on various commercial and operational issues
  • Provide input and/or feedback as requested on various commercial and operational issues
  • Contribute to successful project/initiative outcomes as a team member and/or project manager
  • Other activities mutually agreed with NCTQ President

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, CPA preferred
  • Non-Profit experience
  • Familiarity with Quickbooks and bill.com
  • Available for monthly check in call with Board Treasurer and staff
  • Commitment to attend in-person Board Meetings twice a year in Washington, DC.
  • Proficiency in analyzing data in Excel
This is an on-going contractual position with no anticipated end date. Hourly rate commensurate with experience.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, especially Excel.
