Now that Arnold Schwarzenegger has been elected Governor of California, he is beginning to make appointments that give us the first clues to what sort of policy agenda he will pursue. Recently, the Gubernator appointed former Los Angeles mayor Richard Riordan to the position of state Secretary of Education. The appointment drew criticism from the president of the United Teachers of Los Angeles, John Perez. Perez objected to Riordan on the basis that while mayor, he had opposed a 12% salary increase for teachers, helped to elect a "pro-business" school board, and turned an education reform foundation called LEARN into a charter school management company.
